|
A series of four cases of lipoma of the cauda equina presenting in early childhood at pedi¡þatric -surgical unit of Hanyang University Hospital for two years are discussed with the review of literatures.
All cases are associated with spina bifida ccculta and a history cf insidious onset cf neu¡þrological deficit such as weakness of lower extremities and sphincter disturbances.
In all cases, subtotal removal of the lipoma with laminectomy 2-3 vertebrae alcove was accomplished with improvement in neurological condition.
The benign looking subcutaneous lipoma is always firmly adhered to the tarda equira and Bonus medullaris with stalk-like intradural extension and neurological complication are com¡þmon and ensued eventually.
These affect mainly motor function of lower extremities and bladder function.
Therefore early diagnosis and careful operative treatment before the onset of neurological signs may prevent the development of neurological complication.
